Quick decision
3–5 GB fixed data
A practical range for maps, rides, messaging, restaurant searches and moderate photo sharing.
Prioritise the named network
Check the local partner and its coverage along the actual route, not only the destination headline.
10 GB+ with hotspot
Confirm tethering, high-speed allowance and whether traffic exits through Mexico or abroad.
Compare a local tourist line
A local option may include a Mexican number, but can require identity registration.
The 2026 registration detail most comparisons miss
Telcel states that mobile lines, including its Tourist eSIM, must be registered to the user under rules effective from 9 January 2026. Its current process requires valid photo identification such as a passport. A foreign travel eSIM may follow a different onboarding model because it is issued outside the local retail system, but that does not make every product exempt from every identity check. Read the checkout requirements before relying on airport Wi-Fi.
Telcel, AT&T or Movistar partner?
The provider logo selling the plan is not necessarily the radio network your phone will use. Look for the named Mexican partner in the package details. Coverage in resort corridors can differ from inland highways and smaller towns. A 5G label is conditional on the package, handset bands, partner and location; stable LTE on the right network can be more useful than a generic 5G promise.
Mexico City, Yucatán and road trips
For Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey or a resort-centred stay, modest fixed data is usually sufficient. A Yucatán route, Baja drive or multi-state itinerary deserves an offline map and a network-specific coverage check. Download accommodation details and transport tickets before leaving a city. If connectivity is essential, keep a second line or limited home-carrier fallback.
Calls, WhatsApp and bank texts
Most international travel eSIMs are data-only. WhatsApp normally keeps the number already registered while using the travel line for data. To receive bank SMS on the home number, keep that line enabled only after checking its roaming tariff, disable data roaming on it and turn off automatic cellular-data switching.
Installation checklist
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
- Read whether validity starts at installation or first connection.
- Save the QR code, manual values and support details offline.
- Select the travel eSIM for cellular data after arrival.
- Apply the provider’s data-roaming and APN instructions exactly.
