The safe division of work
| Function | Recommended line | Important setting |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile data | Travel eSIM | Allow roaming if the travel provider requires it |
| Bank OTP by SMS | Home SIM | Disable data roaming on this line |
| WhatsApp data | Travel eSIM | Do not change the registered WhatsApp number |
| Outgoing calls | Ask every time | A home-carrier call may be expensive abroad |
Why WhatsApp usually stays unchanged
WhatsApp uses the number already registered to the account as an identity, but messages and calls travel over whichever internet connection the phone uses. Changing the data SIM does not require changing the WhatsApp number. Decline any unnecessary prompt to migrate the account to a new number.
How to keep verification texts without a data bill
- Set cellular data to the travel eSIM.
- Turn off cellular data switching so the phone cannot silently fall back to the home line.
- Turn off data roaming for the home SIM.
- Keep the home line enabled only if your carrier allows incoming SMS abroad at an acceptable cost.
- Set the default voice line to “Ask every time” where available.
- Before departure, add an authenticator app or backup codes for critical accounts.
When an OTP still fails
Short-code and bank messages may be blocked by the home carrier, unavailable on a roaming partner, or delayed after repeated requests. Do not repeatedly trigger login attempts. Try manual network selection for the home line, use the bank’s authenticator or in-app approval, or contact the carrier over Wi-Fi.
iMessage and FaceTime caution
On iPhone, turning a line off or changing its role can cause a prompt about iMessage registration. Keep the existing number selected under Send & Receive when possible. Do not remove the home SIM profile merely to use travel data.
