How much hotspot data do you need?
- Email and documents: allow roughly 0.2–0.5 GB per working hour depending on syncing.
- Standard video meetings: budget roughly 0.5–1.5 GB per hour.
- HD calls and cloud work: usage can rise beyond 2 GB per hour.
- System updates and backups: can consume many gigabytes unexpectedly.
These are planning ranges, not billing measurements. Turn off automatic operating-system updates, photo backup and cloud sync before tethering.
Why an unlimited plan can still fail for work
A package may continue providing data after a daily threshold while reducing speed. That can be enough for messages but unusable for a video meeting. Some products also impose a smaller hotspot quota than the phone allowance.

- Confirm that ordinary mobile data works first.
- Apply the provider’s APN and roaming instructions.
- Enable Personal Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot.
- Use a strong password and disconnect unused devices.
- Test a real work call before leaving reliable Wi‑Fi.
- Monitor both data consumption and battery temperature.
Battery, heat and charging
Long tethering sessions heat the phone and drain it quickly, particularly while charging or searching for weak signal. Keep the device ventilated, avoid direct sun and carry a suitable power bank. A pocket WiFi router may be better for all-day multi-device use.
